I simply hate these propaganda movies. Here in Brazil we have Lula the son of Brazil. Holy crap, they transform him into a national hero, something like it.

I told a Chinese classmate about my problems with the film, and all he said is that I don't know the history.

Of course, he doesn't get that you shouldn't have to know the history to enjoy a history movie. If I already knew the history, I wouldn't have needed to watch the damn movie.

@Wongsaurus

Good to hear from you! "Non-pharmaceutical sleep aid," huh? Classic.

BTW: I've revised my post slightly to give a better sense of my opinion of the film and why I made the somewhat obscure Star Wars reference in the first place.

From the annals of history the Chinese Civil War of the mid-20th century is one of the greatest conflicts and regime changes of the modern era. But as Darryl F. Zanuck once said: "There is nothing duller on the screen than being accurate but not dramatic;" and he was talking about The Longest Day, the Allied invasion of Normandy in WW2. Well, this PRC film was one of the longest and most boring movies I've ever seen. I could not sit through its whole running time because it was so unendurable. Typical mainland communist propaganda with history according to the victors and presented as entertainment. This is part of the battle for the hearts and minds of the Chinese people. Not just a continuing process for the mainland population but also a softening up barrage aimed at the ROC and other overseas Chinese communities. After all, the PRC has regained Hong Kong and Macao, and only Taiwan is left. The movie also portrayed the civil war and communist liberation as just a family squabble among the Chinese. Of course the noblest Chinese with the highest social conscience and morality were communist who therefore had the most legitimacy to lead (rule) the Chinese nation. This movie is best understood when viewed solely as propaganda or as a non-pharmaceutical sleep aid; instead of counting sheep the viewer counts cameos and in a sleep-like dream state the PRC message goes down easy. Damn clever.

man what's an eye opening for me, before this propaganda flick the only Mao I learn was from Mao's doctor's semi-bio book. I guess that wouldn't be far-off to say winner writes history. IMHO ofcourse :)
