Ronin on Empty centers on Sanjuro Jones — a half-Japanese, half-white, all-American college boy — who previously appeared (although it was actually written afterward) in the published short story “The Sushi Bar at the Edge of Forever.” Basically, through a drunken act of chivalry on Sanjuro’s part, he garners the attention of a retired Hong Kong film producer. It seems that the son of this disgraced movie mogul has gone missing, and it’s up to Sanjuro to track him down. The request seems harmless enough, but the more Sanjuro delves into the mystery, the more he becomes entangled in an intricate web of lies, blackmail, and sordid family secrets. Hijinks ensue…
