Is that the Ngau Tau Kok estate across from Amoy Gardens (the mall)? If so, I have a story to tell about that little cafe… haha

I agree, I think Yasmin’s best work is actually Mukhsin too. although I didn’t really see any of her post-Mukhsin films like Muallaf and Talentime.

Hi Golden Rock –

Glad you think highly of TALENTIME but am surprised that it’s such a surprise movie for you. For one thing, it had previously screened at this year’s HK International Film Festival. For another, I’ve written loads re its director, the late Yasmin Ahmad.

Have you seen other movies by her? If not, I urge you to try to track them down. In particular, I actually rate SEPET and MUKHSIN more highly than TALENTIME. So… maybe I’ll see you at a screening of RABUN soon?

No prob, at least you’ll get to catch KINGYO.

I liked Thirst, but I agree it did drag. Not as good as the first two Vengeance Films, but maybe I’ll rank it about the same level as Lady Vengeance, hm. Kim Ok-Bin was wow.

Am pretty curious about Ain’t No Tomorrows.

Hi, Glenn,

Thirst is definitely not as uneven as Cyborg - the only Park film I’ve seen that I didn’t enjoy (though I just bought the dvd to see if I’ll change my mind). It’s more fun than any of the promotional material implied, but I think the film did drag in certain parts, and it could’ve easily been 10 minutes shorter.

Wow, great photos of the ever luminous and stylish Charlie Yeung!

Thirst is getting some mixed reviews it seems. I liked Cyborg but it certainly is an uneven film — looks great though.

I was really upset when the little theater in Fanling that I used to watch films on closed down some years back. The staff came to recognize me over time and it was a more interpersonal experience than you would get at the chain cinemas. Nice feeling of nostalgia in your entry.

The “boat” there symbolizes the area was a shipyard, building
and servicing vessels. The Lee Family built that to attract
home buyers to the newly developed area. Any theater is good
for watching movie with your beloved ones……..

I hope The Grand Ocean doesn’t close any time soon! It’s my first choice Hong Kong cinema for big action blockbusters — and have good memories of watching movies there.
