Wild Search
Year: 1989 "Damned paparazzi! See what you've driven me to?"
Chow Yun-Fat and Cherie Chung
Director: Ringo Lam Ling-Tung

The Skinny: Underrated Ringo Lam movie that's bound to disappoint those aching for more Full Contact excess. Chow Yun-Fat and Cherie Chung display their usual fine acting chops and winning chemisty.
Review
by Kozo:
Ringo Lam directed this low-tension remake of Peter Weir's Witness. Wild Search is a solid action drama that departs from Lam's usual ultra-violent ways. Chow Yun-Fat is a cop who must protect a four year-old girl after she witnesses her mother's murder at the hands of vicious gun-runners. He follows her to the countryside with her aunt (Cherie Chung), where the three form a makeshift family along with the grumpy grandfather. Then the bad guys (and Cherie's ex-husband) show up to make everything unpleasant.
This is more of a character drama than an action picture, though there are a few violent encounters courtesy of Ringo Lam's favorite psycho, Roy Cheung Yiu-Yeung. The drama encompasses all members of the family, who are all depicted as having lost something (family members, marriages, etc.). As you'd expect, Chow and Cherie fall in love, and the quiet chemistry that the actors bring to the proceedings makes everything worthwhile. Ringo Lam doesn't go overboard (like with Full Contact) and the film ends up adhering more to realism than the hyper-emotional antics that we've come to expect from HK Cinema. Despite the action-drama label, the film actually presents little urgency, and we’re free to enjoy Chow and Cherie’s performances and their pleasant romance. And quite frankly, that's enough to make this a good movie. (Kozo 1995)
