The Tricky Master
Year: 1999 "I crap better movies than this!"
Stephen Chow and Kelly Lin
Director: Wong Jing
Cast: Stephen Chow Sing-Chi, Nick Cheung Ka-Fai, Sandra Ng Kwun-Yu, Suki Kwan Sau-Mei, Kelly Lin, Wong Jing, Law Kar-Ying, Madam Nancy, Lee Siu-Kei, Ng Chi-Hung, Tats Lau Yi-Tat, Bat Leung-Gum, Yuen King-Tan, Lee Kin-Yan, Ken Lo Wai-Kwong, Samuel Leung Cheuk-Moon, Tin Kai-Man
The Skinny: Stephen Chow cashes a check with Wong Jing written on it. Hong Kong's king of comedy sleepwalks through this lazy production while Nick Cheung sweats trying to impress his idol Stephen Chow.
by Kozo:
Wong Jingís Tricky Master is possibly the worst Stephen Chow film in years, which is fitting because this is really a Nick Cheung film. The popular TVB star is at his most annoying as a cop who enlists the help of Tricky Master Chow to outwit bad guy Ferrari (Wong Jing). Along the way, there are parodies of Man Called Hero, The Matrix, Bruce Lee, and just about every other HK gambling movie ever made.
Chow cruises through this movie and hits all his marks, but itís not enough to save this overdone, totally obnoxious piece of commercial fluff. Nick Cheung needs to tone it down, and Wong Jing should stay away from both sides of the camera. Even the ace cast (Sandra Ng, Suki Kwan, Tats Lau) canít save this turkey.
There are maybe twenty or so good jokes in this movie, but out of two hundred that ainít so good. When you bat .100 itís back to the minors for you. Obviously shot in a week, this movie is a creative nadir for HK pop cinema. It was also a big box-office hit, which only proves that people love Stephen Chow. Hell, I love Stephen Chow. But I didnít like this movie.
