Review
by Kozo:
This relatively charming UFO movie features pretty Kelly Chan as a wannabe dancer whose day job is teaching choir at a summer camp for kids. At first inexperience gets the better of her and she has zero success teaching them. They end up blowing it at the choir semi-finals, but get a second chance when someone else drops out. Newly invigorated with a sense of purpose, the kids go about learning how to sing, but not without all those little trials and tribulations that go with growing up (i.e. tolerance, getting along with friends, and coping with parental marital problems). Meanwhile, Chan continues to strive towards her dream of being a professional dancer, and the camp’s P.E. teacher (Aaron Kwok) lusts after her big time.
The kids are surprisingly engaging, though there are some painfully false moments along the way, as well as a finale that just isn’t all that exciting. As the nice guy with bad hair who basically lusts after Chan, Kwok is likable. Newcomer Kelly Chan is strangely distant, though. If the movie is supposed to hinge on her character's emotions and experiences, then the whole thing is a failure. Her vacuous performance turns out to be an indication of the film, which has the narrative thrust of a sick turtle. No urgency is felt anywhere, so it’s hard to really dislike this movie. Or truly love it, either.
